I am lucky enough to own a few negative strips, as well as some rare stills from Mad Max 2. Here's another collection of photos of Mad Max before he became Mad Mel, these ones are from the shot that bookends the film.

In fact, users on the madmaxmovies forum have hypthosied that the current beginning and ending of the film, a dolly shot of Max standing on the road next to the "lone wolf" vehicle (as it's called in the script) is from an original scripted ending that differs significantly from the ending filmed. The reason being that it really doesn't make much sense for Max to be standing next to the "lone wolf" vehicle unless you read the original scripted ending.

In the original script, the Feral Kid is pinned to the tanker by an arrow. Max doesn't crash the tanker, it breaks down. Max jumps off the truck and into the "lone wolf" vehicle with Pappagallo. Wez arrives at the broken down tanker, finds out it holds only sand, and then kills Humungous (!). Wez ties the Feral Kid to the Humongous's vehicle, just as Max realizes the Feral Kid has been left behind. Max turns around and drives after him in the "lone wolf" vehicle which he takes from Pappagallo. Max then kills Wez with an arrow to the eye and brings the "lone wolf" vehicle to a stop at the top of a hill. From there he watches the getaway of the rest of the gas in the bus. This is the very shot that was used to open and close the film.

In the film as it exists now,  Pappagallo is killed by a spear that the Humungous throws, and that's the last we see of him and his vehicle "the lone wolf". So it's safe to assume that they liked this footage of Max on the road next to the "lone wolf" enough to use it, even thought it didn't fit in with the continuity of what was shot later on.

Even if you're not familiar enough with the film to follow all of that, at least you have some fantastic photos to look at:

below: unpublished shots from original negative of Max at the end of the film
below:  examples of posters (etc.) and publicity photos released with the film featuring stills from this scene
